As the exploit was revealed, many players began to ask Bethesda for help. The publisher and developer have not announced the news on social media, perhaps so that others do not discover and share the exploit. Bethesda Game Studios made a public announcement on Reddit Fallout 76 sudreddit. They posted a message shortly before December 25, but the problem is still being reported.
Bethesda said, “We are investigating reports of a PC-only exploit which could be abused by cheaters, which may have resulted in the loss of some players’ items that their characters had equipped. We are actively working on a solution to this problem and we currently have a fix that we are currently evaluating. The company has announced that it will work with the players to compensate them for their loss. Bethesda Provides Update On Fallout 76 Inventory Exploit Including Player Compensation Players must submit a ticket to the Bethesda customer support team with more information regarding their loss.
Submitting a ticket when the victim doesn’t know how it happened can be tricky. Reddit users suggested recording the time, date, where the user was in the game, and what was taken. Players do not have to know the name of the person who took their gear, as others have reported that the exploit happened at rendering distance. Bethesda believes that “only a small number of characters have been negatively affected” while the players do not agree. Many contend that it is hundreds or thousands, but there is no word on the exact number affected.
For now, the only safe way to play is to play on consoles, stay offline, or play on private servers. Private servers cost money, but it’s the only way to continue enjoying Fallout 76 on PC and avoid being exploited.
